A flower to me is a symbol of not only beauty and femininity, but of life and hope. These abstracted floral paintings speak of my own personal dilemmas as an artist, a woman, and a person. As an artist, I am in tune with seeing the beauty of ordinary things everyday. And as a woman, I see myself as beautiful and feminine. But as a person in an uncertain world, I am unsure about many things and am conflicted with insecurities and feelings of confusion about my own place in such a beautiful world. Through working with something that is naturally as beautiful and hopeful as a flower, I use my own personal feelings to interject into the painting something that might remind us that beauty and order still exists, but that there is also something more chaotic within. Although these are deeply personal feelings, I believe everyone can relate. The Bird of Paradise series is based on my travels and feelings of where I belong in this world. What is the definition of home when so many places can feel like it, and where is it located within both reality and in my heart? The Bird of Paradise symbolizes new beginnings and anticipation, but for me it also symbolizes heartache for the past. This concept ties into the dichotomy that I have already created with the organic versus linear nature of my pieces.
